Templars Knights

Templars Knights
The Templars Knights were Monks - Soldiers: Guardians of the Faith, Guardians of the Holy Land, and Guardians of the Pilgrims. The Templars Knights order, of religious and military character, was founded in Jerusalem in the year 1118 by nine crusader knights. with the official denomination of "Order of the Poor Knight of Christ". Later they were known by the "Knight of Solomon's Temple" (Templar) denomination after establishing themselves in King Solomon's ancient temple. The Pope Inocencio II recognized the order of the Templar in the year 1139. The stamp of the Templar, emblem of the order; is two knights mounted on the same horse (representing the duel vocation of the order - religious and military) with the insciption in Latin "sigilum militum Xpisti" - (Stamp of Christ's militia).

Templars Knights Order of Calatrava

The Templars Knights Order of Calatrava was the first military and religious order founded in the Kingdom of Castile, but the second to receive papal approval. The papal bull confirming the Order of Calatrava as a Militia was given by Pope Alexander III on September 26, 1164. The Order of Calatrava was founded by Abbot Raymond of Fitero with the original purpose of protecting the town of Calatrava, located near present-day Ciudad Real.

As their numbers and strength grew they were invited in 1147 by the King of Castile, Alfonso VII, to protect a castle he had taken from the Moors. The castle was called Calatrava (Arabic Qal'at Rabah: 'fortress of Rabah'). The Templars established a garrison there and stayed for ten years. They were replaced by a militia of Cistercian laymen, under the supervision of Raymond, Abbot of the Cistercian monastery of Fitero. No doubt these local herdsmen and laborers would have had a personal grudge against the Moors, whom they fought with great enthusiasm.

In 1187, a general chapter at Cîteaux gave these Knights of Calatrava their definitive rule, which was approved in the same year by Pope Gregory VIII. This rule retained the Cistercian customs required of laymen, plus the obligation to wear their armor 24/7 and be ready to fight whenever the need arose. (Not very comfortable, but following vows of silence, nobody complained.)

Initially, these Knights of Calatrava were hugely successful and were rewarded by grants of land from the King of Castile. But by 1195, after a surge of new Muslim recruits from Africa, the Knights were overpowered and the Moors retook the castle which they kept for another 17 years. The Calatravas then recovered possession of the stronghold and from there spread to the far corners of Iberia.

Templars Knights Order of St. James
The Templars Knights Order of St. James of the Sword , also known as the Knights Templar Order of Saint James of Compostela, as well as the Knights Templar Order of Santiago (Santiaguista) was born in the year 1175 in the Kingdom of Leon Spain. The Order of Santiago was a military and religious order with the original dual purpose to fight and drive back the Moors (Muslims) from the Iberian Peninsula as well as to protect the pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago on their ways to the sanctuary of Compostella.

Knights Templar Order's name comes from the patron saint of Spain, James the Greater, under whom's protection Galicians' and Asturians' Christians started to fight the Moors in Spain in the 9th century. The Order's emblem insignia, The Cross of Santiago, was depicted on the standard borne by the Knights Templar. The emblem is formed by an elaborate red cross on a golden field.

During the Reconquista, the Knights Templar of St James were one of the elite corps at the disposal of the christian kings. Following the death of the Grand Master in 1493 Alonso de Cardenas, the Catholic Monarchs joined the Order to the Crown of Spain and Pope Adrian VI joined forever Maestrazgo Santiago to the crown in 1523.

Templars Knights Order of Teutonic Knights
The Order of the Teutonic Knights of St. Mary's Hospital in Jerusalem is a German Roman Catholic religious order. It was formed to aid Christians on their pilgrimages to the Holy Land and to establish hospitals to care for the sick and injured. Its members have commonly been known as the Teutonic Knights, since they also served as a crusading military order during the Middle Ages. The membership was always small and whenever the need arose, volunteers or mercenaries augmented the military forces.

The Teutonic Order was founded by Emperor Henry VI as a hospital order in 1191, similar to the Templars and Hospitallers, in Acre, in the Levant, the medieval Order played an important role in Outremer, controlling the port tolls of Acre. By 1198, the German Teutonic Order became a religious military order of crusaders, first fighting in the Holy Land and later in Prussia and Lithuania. After Christian forces were defeated in the Middle East, the Order moved to Transylvania in 1211 to help defend Hungary against the Cumans. They were expelled in 1225 after allegedly attempting to place themselves under Papal instead of Hungarian sovereignty.

In 1230, following the Golden Bull of Rimini, Grand Master Hermann von Salza and Duke Konrad I of Masovia launched the Prussian Crusade, a joint invasion of Prussia to Christianise the Baltic Old Prussians. The Order then created the independent Monastic State of the Teutonic Knights in the conquered territory, and subsequently conquered Courland, Livonia, and Estonia. The Kings of Poland accused the Order of holding lands rightfully theirs.

The Order lost its main purpose in Europe with the Christianisation of Lithuania. The Order became involved in campaigns against its Christian neighbours, the Kingdom of Poland, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and the Novgorod Republic (after assimilating the Livonian Order). The Teutonic Knights had a strong economic base, hired mercenaries from throughout Europe to augment their feudal levies, and became a naval power in the Baltic Sea. In 1410, a Polish-Lithuanian army decisively defeated the Order and broke its military power at the Battle of Grunwald (Tannenberg).

In 1515, Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I made a marriage alliance with Sigismund I of Poland-Lithuania. Thereafter the Empire did not support the Order against Poland. In 1525, Grand Master Albert of Brandenburg resigned and converted to Lutheranism, becoming Duke of Prussia. Estonia and Livonia soon followed, and also the Order's holdings in Protestant areas of Germany.

The Order kept its considerable holdings in Catholic areas of Germany until 1809, when Napoleon Bonaparte ordered its dissolution and the Order lost its last secular holdings. Napoleon gave the order's main assets to his allies of the Confederation of the Rhine The Order continued to exist as a charitable and ceremonial body. It was outlawed by Hitler in 1938, but re-established in 1945. Today it operates primarily with charitable aims in Central Europe.

The Knights wore white surcoats with a black cross. A cross pattée was sometimes used as their coat of arms; this image was later used for military decoration and insignia by the Kingdom of Prussia and Germany as the Iron Cross. The motto of the Order was:"Helfen, Wehren, Heilen" ("Help, Defend, Heal")

Templars Knights Order of Hospitallers
The Hospitallers, known officially as "Knights of the Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem," was founded in Jerusalem during the first Crusade by the Italian friar Gerardo da Sasso to assist the pilgrims travelling the Holy Land. His successor, Raymond du Puy, finished the work with the creation of an armed branch composed of crusader knights. It has been known also as "Knights of Rhodes", and as the "Sovereign Order of the Knights of Malta." It was at first a charitable Order, while the Templars was from the first a military one. With the fall of the Latin kingdom of Jerusalem in 1291, the Knights retired to the island of Rhodes. In 1522 the Turks finally took Rhodes, and the Hospitallers removed to Malta. Here they remained till 1793, when Napoleon took Malta, and added it to the French Republic. This ended it as a sovereign power. While the Knights had to leave Malta, shorn of their old power and great wealth, they still continued on in different countries. The Knights took with them from Malta their precious relics--chief among them being the hand of St. John the Baptist, the miraculous image of Our Lady of Pherlemon, and a fragment of the true cross.

King Richard the LionHeart Tunic Costume
    by Marto of Toledo Spain
King Richard the Lion Heart , the second Plantagenet king of England, was born September 8, 1157 and ascended the throne of England on July 6, 1189. King Richard the LionHeart ruled until his death April 6, 1199. Known also as Richard I of England, King Richard also ruled as Duke of Normandy, Duke of Aquitaine, Duke of Gascony, Lord of Ireland, Lord of Cyprus, Count of Anjou, Count of Maine, Count of Nantes and Overlord of Brittany at various times.

At age 16, Prince Richard was already commanding his own army, putting down rebellions in Poitou against his father, King Henry II. Richard became known as Coeur de Lion or, Richard the Lionheart, even before his accession, at the beginning of the Third Crusade when Philip of France was compared with a lamb and Richard with a lion. He convinced his officers in Winchester, around the "Round Table" of having belonged to king Arthur's legend and possessing the magic sword "Excalibur". King Richard the Lion Heart was a central Christian commander during the Third Crusade, effectively leading the campaign after the departure of Philip Augustus, and scoring considerable victories against his Muslim counterpart, Saladin.

While the absent king spent very little time in his Kingdom, preferring to use it as a source of revenue to support his armies, King Richard the Lion Hearted was a generous knight and a wise politician, but above all a great soldier. His own personal ability was a source of inspiration for his men in battle and he was a beloved hero of his subjects. King Richard the LionHearted remains one of the very few Kings of England remembered by his epithet, not number, and is an enduring, iconic figure in England.

The Templar Knight Great Helm Helmet by Marto of Toledo Spain , also called a Pot Helm, was the typical helmet used by the crusaders and by the Templars in particular for the whole duration of the Crusades. Its name comes from the shape which is very similar to a pot and due to the necessity to offer the best possible protection to the head. However, the view capabilities were greatly reduced letting possible only the frontal view and for this reason this helm was used also by cavalry for charges or tourneys. This model is made in steel enriched by a brass cross used to denote the knight affiliation to the army of God and by a series of traceries in the shape of crosses useful to improve the air access inside the helm. The helm comes with a practical metallic display stand.

    Damascene Templar Pendant
    by Marto of Toledo Spain
The Damascene Templar Pendant by Marto of Toledo Spain is decorated with 24K Gold damascene artwork. It features the Vichiers' (Renaud de Vichiers was the 19th Grand Master of the Knights Templar, from 1250 to 1256) seal: SIGILLUM MILITUM XPISTI. Although the phrase is written using the Latin alphabet, the first two letters of Christ's name are the Greek XP (Chi Rho) rather than the Latin CHR. The XP symbol's origin lies in the early roots of Christianity, but came into popular use after the Emperor Constantine had a vision of it and, according to legend, converted to Christianity in the early fourth century. From the time of Constantine, it became one of the most significant symbols of Christianity, surpassed only by the cross itself. Its early associations with the military made it the more apt of the two symbols for the Templars. In fact the Chi Rho can also be seen on the shields of the knights. Another useful collectible item essential for all the fans of this famous order.

  • Medieval Templar Knight Swords Collection

The Templar Order was established in 1118 to ensure the custody of the Holy places and to protect the pilgrimage routes. The Templar Order reached it's maximum splendour in the 13th century. The knights Templar considered themselves as knights of God, protectors of the church and christianity. Their motto was:"NON NOBIS, DOMINE, NON NOBIS, SED TUO NOMINI DA GLORIAM". "Give Glory, not for us, God, not for us, but for your name".

The medieval Templar Knights fought along side King Richard I (Richard The Lion Hearted) and other Crusaders in the battles for the Holy Lands. The Templars were a very well organized military force and they were the clash forces in all the Crusades. The Templar Knights were in the vanguard during the attacks and in the rearguard during the retreats. During one century they ensured the effective government of the latin kingdom of Constantinople. The Templar Knights did not pay taxes or tributes, obeyed only the Pope and they had properties in all of Europe and the Middle East.

    Knights of St John Sword
This is a decorative sword inspired by the Order of St John of Jerusalem. The order has also been known as the "Knights of Rhodes", and as the "Sovereign Order of the Knights of Malta." This order was at first a charitable Order, while the Templars were the first military one. With the fall of the Latin kingdom of Jerusalem in 1291, the Knights retired to the island of Rhodes. In 1522 the Turks finally took Rhodes, and the Hospitallers retreated to Malta. Here they remained till 1793, until Napoleon took Malta, and added it to the French Republic. This ended the sovereign power of the Order. While the Knights of St John had to leave Malta, shorn of their old power and great wealth, they still continued on in different countries. The Knights of St John took with them from Malta their precious relics--chief among them being the hand of St. John the Baptist, the miraculous image of Our Lady of Pherlemon, and a fragment of the true cross.

  • The Mystique of the Templars Knights

Permission to use this article is granted as long as source is acknowledged with a link back to ToledoSword.com

Throughout history, a number of different knightly orders and societies bloomed. Examples of these include the Knights Hospitaller, the Order of the Garter and scores of others. However, for all this proliferation, there is one single organization that has captured the imagination and speculation of people down through the long centuries. The Knights Templar were an order of knights founded about the same time as the Hospitallers, though they were to go on to gain far greater fame (and infamy) than any other such organization.

The Knights Templar earned distinction during the Crusades, providing protection for pilgrims on their way to Jerusalem, as well as providing their services to the various nobles intent on retaking the birthplace of Christianity from the Muslims. However, the Templars also became known for amassing an incredible store of wealth and were actually responsible for the spread of banking throughout the medieval world in some respects. During their heyday, the Knights Templar were the most powerful organization of their type. Of course, this created rivalries and intense jealousy. Rumors of their wealth inflamed the hearts of rulers eager to lay their hands on such treasure.

One such ruler was King Phillip IV of France. Deeply in debt to the Templars, he saw their demise as a means of eliminating his debt, as well as confiscating their treasure. To this end, he had the leaders of the order, as well as any members that could be found, arrested and thrown in prison.

Torture at the hands of the Inquisition was to follow, based on charges of witchcraft, devil worship and anti-Christian practices. Despite the fact that many Templars were granted trials, King Phillip devised a means to reach his goal - between 1312 and 1314, many of the knights were burned at the stake, and the order was disbanded by the Pope. However, despite the destruction of the order and the execution of many members, rumors concerning the Knights Templar have remained for centuries.
